Morning Glory Mine Camp, Death Valley
Resources: |
A second mineral commodity sought during World War II was tungsten. As early as 1937 the world demand for this product was increasing substantially, due mainly to business recovery and expanded uses for the metal, and the advancing prices occasioned by higher production costs were promoting development in the United States of hundreds of mines and prospects. Estimates were made that in 1937 the world production of tungsten would equal the 35,000 tons produced during World War 1. Small tungsten deposits have been found at the Sheepshead-Victory Group in Trail Canyon. With tungsten mining encouraged by the U.S. government much of the work was completed in the 1950s.
The Morning Glory Group of four claims located in the south fork of Trail Canyon were owned by Morning Glory Mines, Inc. of Albuquerque, NM with Abram H. Kreider as president.
Trail Canyon is accessed from the Death Valley Westside Road. This is a rough and rocky road accessible only by high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicles. South Fork Trail Canyon road ends at the Morning Glory Mine Camp that was relocated as the Lucky Find Millsite No.1 and 2. The area is very remote so plan your outing with plenty of water, food, fuel, and essentials. In the tradition of the Old West please leave this place better than when you found it for future explorers to enjoy. |
